Certified Police Officer Training
This is an overview of the training process for Certified Police Officers.
Police Officers Certified in the Commonwealth of Virginia
You will attend pre-Field Training familiarization with the Department. Your certifications will be reviewed for transfer, and you will qualify with your Department-issued firearm. As a Police Officer certified in Virginia, you will have eight (8) weeks of field training. You will complete a mandatory probation period which lasts approximately one year from your date of employment. You will need to satisfactorily complete all necessary training requirements to complete the probationary period. Extensions may be granted to applicants whose training is not completed within one year from their date of employment.
Police Officers Certified Outside the Commonwealth of Virginia
Applicants certified outside of the State of Virginia will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Depending on your current certifications, you may be eligible to attend an abbreviated academy, or you may have to attend the Hampton Roads Criminal Justice Training Academy.
